What's in a Name? As some of you are already aware, George Poe of GP3 is not his real name...well the George part is, but the 2nd half (the part with the Poe in it) is not. No one has ever been able to get a serious answer from George (or bandmates Lee and Matthew) for why they felt that this deception is/was necessary.
Their smart-aleck answers range from "We were
trying to get a gig at party for congressman
Ted Poe, and thought that would get us in
good with the event planner." or "George is in
the witness-protection program." or "It's the
name of Lee's hometown of
Poe, Indiana." or "It's a dollar from the
old Spanish currency: 'Pieces of
Eight." or "The lantern-carrying ghost
enemies of the
Legend of
Zelda games." More practical explanations
include: "It's easier for people to spell on the
check." and "It fit the graphic on the
band's sign better."
Wildly esoteric replies have been heard to
include "The
synthetic polymer HO-(CH2-CH2-O-)n-H
also known as Polyoxyethylene", "Portal of
Evil", and "It's an acronym for Power over
Ethernet." George has even been overheard
telling someone that the ghost of Wilhelm
Richard Wagner told them to call the group
George POE Trio. Click here to see more POEs
> Regardless of its origin, George's moniker has stuck, and clients and supporters alike refer to this piano-playing prankster as 'Poe'. During their search for the 'true' answer for the name change, the team of GP3 investigators discovered many well-known celebrities have discarded their birth names for more accessible pseudonyms.
