Born in
Louisiana, many nights found a young Matthew falling asleep to the croonings of his disc jockey father. So it's no wonder the middle-aged
Matthew finds comfort in listening (and playing) some of those same
standards. And the radio station in his head boasts 45's and flipsides,
from everyone from bygone musical groups to his beloved Beatles.
He describes the moment he found his upright bass around the corner from
Kafka's birthplace in Prague as “love at first sight”. Most
afternoons, he searches up and down its antique, ebony neck for what
makes those old songs so great while discovering a way to make the new
songs sound even better.
His puzzle piece finds a context in The George Poe Trio and a voice in
its lyrics, whether lead or harmony. Matthew has only his “inner
child” to entertain but he certainly feels validated when yours
listens in as well.
